The Answear: Something Magical
You don’t just get a cool school project; you get a raw, unfiltered glimpse into the future of cinema. You unleash a torrent of creativity, suddenly unshackled from the limits of physical locations and budgets. You see passion ignite as young creators realize their wildest ideas are now within reach.
Filmmaker and producers, live with the constant challenge of bringing the world inside their heads to the screen. The most powerful tool to bridge that gap today is LED volumes for filmmaking. This technology is revolutionizing Hollywood, but we believe its true power is unlocked when it’s made accessible to everyone. This is the story of what happened when we, along with a team of passionate partners, brought professional HoloDeck™ LED panels to the brilliant young storytellers at Mater Dei High School.
A Chance Encounter in a Sea of Innovation
Every year, the NAB Show in Las Vegas becomes the global epicenter for broadcast and media innovation. It’s a dazzling, overwhelming, and inspiring convergence of technology and creativity. Two years ago, amidst this vibrant energy, our team at HOLODECK, including co-founder John Hu, set up our virtual production showcase. Our goal was to demonstrate the photorealistic power of our HOLODECK LED volume technology. The backdrop was a stunningly realistic diner environment, meticulously recreated by the digital architects at Global Objects, making it nearly impossible to distinguish the virtual from the real on camera.
It was here, in a moment that could have easily been lost in the noise, that we met Andrew Roberts. As the Film and Media Arts Department Chair at Mater Dei High School, Andrew is a man fueled by a deep passion for empowering his students. He wasn’t just looking at our technology; he was seeing its potential. He saw past the specs and the sales pitches and glimpsed a new reality for his classroom.

Mater Dei is an institution renowned for its commitment to excellence—a place where the ethos of “Honor, Glory, and Love” fosters an environment of profound achievement in academics, athletics, and the arts. Andrew saw a direct line between the school’s mission to shape future leaders and the transformative power of the virtual production stage before him. A spark of an idea was ignited: What if we could bridge the gap between professional-grade cinematic technology and secondary education? What if we could put these tools directly into the hands of aspiring young filmmakers?
From a Dream to a Digital Reality
That conversation at NAB could have ended with a handshake and a business card. Instead, it was the beginning of a shared journey. At HOLODECK, we operate on a dual philosophy. We are, without a doubt, a “beast in scale,” with the robust manufacturing capabilities to deliver massive projects with supply chain excellence. But the heart of our company lies in our white glove approach—a boutique, relationship-driven service that thrives on collaboration and bespoke solutions. This project was a perfect embodiment of that ethos.

The idea of donating and installing a HOLODECK LED volume at Mater Dei quickly moved from a “what if” to a “how do we.” This wasn’t a transaction; it was the formation of a partnership for the good of the community.
A vision this ambitious requires a village. We were humbled and overjoyed when our friend and partner, Julio Linares, Chief Creative Officer of AdsWork LLC, and his incredibly talented team joined the cause. They generously volunteered their time, expertise, and technology to help manage the complex integration, content workflow, and installation. Their involvement is a testament to the project’s spirit: a collective effort fueled by a shared belief in the next generation. This collaborative approach, where we work hand-in-hand with clients and partners to bring a creative vision to life, is the HOLODECK way.
So, If you’re you looking to build a virtual production stage that’s backed by a team of passionate, collaborative experts, we invite you to discover the HOLODECK partnership approach.
Why Virtual Production in High School?
Bringing a professional-grade LED volume for filmmaking into a high school setting may seem audacious, but it is, in fact, essential. The film industry is facing a critical skills gap. A 2021 report by the Visual Effects Society (VES) highlighted the escalating demand for talent proficient in real-time technologies like Unreal Engine, the software that powers many virtual productions. By providing students with hands-on access to the same tools used on major motion pictures, we are not just teaching them filmmaking; we are preparing them for the future of the industry.
This immersive learning environment offers unparalleled benefits:
- Practical Experience: Students move beyond theory, gaining practical, hands-on experience with lighting, virtual cinematography, and on-set operations.
- Collaborative Skills: Virtual production is inherently collaborative, requiring seamless communication between directors, cinematographers, VFX artists, and engineers. Students learn to work in a multi-disciplinary team, mirroring a real-world studio environment.
- Creative Liberation: The barriers to creation are lowered. A student’s vision is no longer limited by the physical constraints of a location or the high cost of set construction. They can travel to Mars, visit a fantasy kingdom, or recreate a historical event, all from within the walls of their school.
This initiative is about more than just career readiness; it’s about nurturing the very essence of creative confidence. It’s about empowering young storytellers to think bigger and bolder than ever before.
The Technology Behind the Dream
A powerful vision requires an equally powerful technological foundation. The HoloDeck™ LED panel installed at Mater Dei is the culmination of years of engineering focused squarely on the needs of cinematographers and in-camera performance. When designing LED volumes for filmmaking, every single component decision has a direct impact on the final image.
The Soul of the Image: Uncompromising Color and Light
The human eye—and by extension, the camera lens—is incredibly sensitive to color and light. Any imperfection can shatter the illusion of reality. That’s why we engineered the HoloDeck™ series for unparalleled color fidelity.
- Expansive Color Gamut: Our panels achieve 99.7% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space and 95% of BT.2020. This wide gamut ensures that the colors captured on set are vibrant, rich, and true to the creator’s intent, providing maximum flexibility in post-production. The Brompton Hydra report confirms our panels’ exceptional performance, with near-perfect coverage across all primary colors within the Rec. 709 and DCI-P3 spaces.
- True-to-Life Skin Tones: We place a special emphasis on the accurate reproduction of skin tones. Our technology is designed to excel in the R9, R13, and R15 color values, which are critical for natural-looking skin. This eliminates the dreaded digital “lobsterization,” where skin appears artificially red or oversaturated.
- Optimized Brightness & HDR: With a calibrated brightness of 1500-1800 NITS , our panels deliver brilliant highlights and a stunning high-dynamic range (HDR) performance, allowing cinematographers to capture incredible detail in both the brightest and darkest parts of an image.
Deep Contrast and Flawless Performance as the Foundation of Realism
The secret to a truly immersive virtual environment is its ability to replicate the deep, velvety blacks of the real world. This is where our proprietary PantaBlack™ technology comes in.
- Extraordinary Contrast Ratio: The HoloDeck™ LED features a native 16000:1 contrast ratio, a staggering improvement over the 5000:1 ratio of conventional panels. This is achieved through a combination of specialized LEDs and a deep black, low-reflectivity surface (only 3% reflectivity). The result is an image with incredible depth and dimensionality, where blacks are truly black, making the virtual world feel tangible.
- Engineered for the Camera: We understand the technical challenges of capturing an LED screen. Our panels are built with high refresh rates up to 240 FPS and high scan rates (1/8 or 1/16) to eliminate moiré patterns and flicker, even with fast camera movements or slow-motion shots. We’ve solved the “IC Driver Trilemma”, balancing brightness, grayscale, and refresh rate to ensure a flawless on-camera image.
Built for the Rigors of Production
A production environment is demanding. The technology must be not only powerful but also reliable and efficient.
- Superior Heat Management: Heat is the enemy of electronics. Unlike panels that use plastic components, our cabinets feature an aluminum chassis that is vastly more effective at dissipating heat. This “Heat-Spot Elimination” design ensures color consistency and extends the life of the LEDs.
- Seamless and Flexible Construction: From a complete ground stacking solution that can go 12 meters high to robust flying capabilities, our systems are designed for easy and precise construction. Features like our Captive 5-Sided Angle Dial allow for the creation of perfectly smooth, curved walls, like the one now inspiring students at Mater Dei.
The Future is in Their Hands
The installation at Mater Dei is complete. The HOLODECK LED volume stands as a silent, powerful canvas, waiting for the first of many stories to be told. It represents a confluence of passion, partnership, and technological excellence. It’s a symbol of our belief that the most advanced tools should not be locked away in exclusive studios but shared to ignite the creativity of the next generation. This project showcases our identity: a company with the power to manufacture on a massive scale but with the heart and soul of a boutique partner, dedicated to helping our clients and our community achieve their dreams.
We have provided the canvas and the tools. Now, the story is in the hands of the students. Watching them step onto this stage for the first time, seeing their eyes light up with the infinite possibilities before them, is the ultimate return on investment. The future of filmmaking is not just about bigger screens or higher resolutions. It’s about the democratization of storytelling. And by investing in education with cutting-edge LED volumes for filmmaking, we are helping to write its next, most exciting chapter.
